The Darcys Give a Ball

This light and airy bow to the Darcys after their marriage offers an acceptably Austenian setting. With their children and those of their neighbors and friends coming into their own, it behooves Elizabeth and Darcy to give a ball; they're mostly offscreen while several plot lines are resolved neatly. Mr. Collins finally receives his feverishly anticipated inheritance of Longbourn; he dreams of leaving the clergy and joining the landed gentry. (Charlotte Collins, his wife, must be ambiguous about his goals, in deference to her friendship for Elizabeth Darcy.) Miss Anne De Bourgh, daughter of the late redoubtable Lady Catherine De Bourgh, is found happily married to a husband with great musical enthusiasm, if not talent, producing one of the gentle humorous moments in the work. Charlotte Collins experiences quite a change of life as well, as much due to Mr. Collins's late-developing affection for her as from his unusual reaction to the final chapter of . Missing is any real dealing with the passing of Elizabeth's father, Mr. Bennet, or Elizabeth's reaction to it, but the addition of the Collins's daughter, Eliza, is a welcome one. This mildly charming addition keeps the Austen mill churning.<

Frīdrihs-Vilhelms Nīcše

Antikrists

Aigars Jirgens patapināja no Nīcšes astoņus vārdus «nevis jūsu grēks - jūsu pieticība kliedz pret debesīm», kauninot tos tautfrontiešus, kuriem joprojām rēgojās brīvā Latvija brīvā Krievijā. No viņu puses atbildi sniedza Guntis Valujevs, arī iepinot Nīcšes uzvārdu sava raksta nosaukumā: Latvijas neatkarība, lūk, nedrīkst tikt uzskatīta par mērķi, bet tikai par līdzekli cilvēku labklājībai un vēl dažām labām lietām, kurām, ja gribat zināt, pēc «lielā maksimālista» Nīcšes prāta, traucē tieši «demokrātiskie aizspriedumi», «mazo valstu komēdijas», «nacionālās neirozes»…"

No vācu valodas tulkoja: Pēteris Brants.1996
<

Gérard-De Nerval

Promenades Et Souvenirs

Nauczyciel łaciny zostaje uznany winnym a w konsekwencji trafia do zakładu psychiatrycznego. Po latach, odwiedza go córka, przed którą dotychczas ukrywano tożsamość jej prawdziwego ojca. Opuszcza zakład zdenerwowana, a w drodze powrotnej przepada bez wieści. Woman with Birthmark

A mother's dying wish sealed with a deadly promise. Four men with a secret they thought they'd buried decades earlier. A detective in love. A man desperate to live despite the shadow of his guilty past.

After hearing her mother's deathbed confession and following her mother's dreary funeral, Maria Adler realizes she has no other option but to seize upon her mother's imperative to do something. Dissolving the life she loathes, Maria changes her appearance and disappears. When she emerges, revenge is her sole occupation.

Van Veeteren and his associates are left bewildered by the curious murder of a man shot twice in the heart and twice below the belt. A quiet, utterly dull man, the only suspicious activity his surviving wife can recall is a series of peculiar phone calls. Repeatedly the telephone would ring, offering no answer aside from an obscure pop song from the 1960s. This siren song is linked to an identical murder, but the true link between these heinous crimes remains unknown while a daughter's pride grows with the satisfaction of vengeance and another detective's lover offers telling insights that only an outsider could deduce.

With the critical eye and cool observation necessary for a successful chess match, Van Veeteren pursues his subject across the country. Wading through the outrageous leads and fruitless tips, he chases his mark. A breathless thriller full of deception, blackmail, and cold murder, Woman with Birthmark is a chilling read.
<

Irène Nemirovsky

David Golder

<
