Goethe wählte — durchaus im Wettstreit mit dem darin erfolgreichen Johann Heinrich Voß — als Versform durchgehend den Hexameter. Er gab dem Werk stark spöttische, mitunter boshafte Züge; sein Epos kann durchaus auch als Kritik des höfischen Lebens gelesen werden, das er gut kannte.
