Vignettes

In 1982 the quality fanzine NIEKAS put out a volume of short stories. Very short stories.

Each was limited to fifty words. Shorter than this introduction. I started out as a natural story writer, and shifted to novels because the fickleness of story editors prevented me from earning a living in stories. But they wanted me to contribute, so I tried. Actually I wrote three, and they duly appeared in 50 Extremely SF Stories along with the forty-seven entries by other writers. It's really not easy to do a story that short; characterization and description suffer, for one thing. But it can be done.
