⁹⁰ There is currently a proposal to switch from the ECDSA digital signature system to a similar (but in some ways better) system called Schnorr. It seems reasonably likely that Schnorr will be implemented due to some of its superior characteristics, and it appears that the reason Bitcoin’s signature system was not originally based on Schnorr is that Schnorr was under patent protection until 2008. Given that Schnorr therefore hadn’t been tested nearly as much as ECDSA, it seems that Bitcoin’s creator chose the safer option. Discussion of Schnorr and the proposal can be found at the following URLs. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schnorr_signature ; http://diyhpl.us/wiki/transcripts/sf-bitcoin-meetup/2018-07-09-taproot-schnorr-signatures-and-sighash-noinput-oh-my/.
