CHAPTER 1

The Vulcan led the way through the narrow, cramped corridors of the merchant vessel, from the crew and passenger quarters in the rear through the cargo area that was located in the center of the ship and made up most of the freighter’s internal volume.

They were headed for the vessel’s bridge. As always, Sel`den followed the Teacher dutifully.

On the way, he resisted the temptation to berate

himself for his behavior in the Vulcan’s quarters. Such self-recrimination was unproductive and illogical—as his teacher had taught him.

For the moment, he would only resolve to not fail again. Later, he would meditate as the Vulcan had suggested.

At the end of the long passage through the cargo area, a door hissed open as they approached it. Stepping through, teacher and pupil appeared on the small, efficient bridge. The other five students were already waiting for them, eager to see the first signs of their destination.

Immediately, the five Romulans raised their hands in the traditional Vulcan salute. Returning the gesture, the Teacher said, “Peace and long life.”

As a planet loomed on the bridge’s main viewscreen, Sel`den took his place at the communications console. He had programmed the ship some time ago with codes that would allow them to land on Constanthus. Nevertheless, he oversaw the clearance process personally, watching the planet’s defense computer begin to access the ship’s data banks.

The computer explored the ship’s passenger and crew lists, scrutinized its manifest, and confirmed its authorization. From his station, Sel’den continued to provide the preprogrammed information and receive the proper authorizations.

Always careful when taking the Vulcan into a new environment, Sel’den was particularly concerned about this venture. After all, in the past, the Teacher and his followers had restricted their activities to Romulus— where Sel’den felt comfortable, having lived there all his life.

He had received his security training there. He knew the ins and outs of the place,’ to the extent that he could detect a problem from a long way off.

Constanthus, however, was another matter entirely. One of the Empire’s outer worlds but one that was rising; in importance, it was ruled with an iron fist by its governor. A dangerous place indeed for a unificationist.

Sel’den knew there would be subtle differences in security measures and internal politics here. Differences that he could not accurately forecast. Risks he could not fully assess.

But despite Sel’den’s objections, the Teacher had insisted on the trip. The expansion of the movement to Constanthus was very important to the Vulcan. And though he had not chosen to share his reasons with his student, Sel’den had his suspicions.

As their small merchant ship glided through Constanthus’s atmosphere, Sel’den glanced at his mentor—a tall, stately individual with pronounced cheekbones and dark, patient eyes. The student had never met anyone like his teacher before. He would be surprised if there were others of his stature even on Vulcan.

After a while, Sel’den felt the ship touch the planet’s surface. Only then did he look up from his computer terminal.

He took a breath. The difficult part was over. Now all they had to do was disembark.

Leaving his station, Sel’den fell into line behind the Teacher and, along with the other students, followed him down a flight of stairs to the ship’s personnel airlock. Opening it, they breathed in the air of Constanthus. Though it had a peculiarly acrid odor, perhaps due to the effects of some local plant life, it was largely the same air they breathed on Romulus.

The Vulcan was the first of their group to set foot on Constantharine soil. In the past, Sel’den had argued that the Teacher should always let others lead, to minimize the danger to himself and thus to the movement. But the Vulcan preferred to be the first to assume new risks, and Sel’den knew better than to question his teacher’s logic in the matter.

When they were all assembled on the landing area, they were met by an older, burly Romulan whose jowls showed a lifetime of good eating. Sel’den recognized the man as Belan, leader of the fledgling unificationist movement on Constanthus.

Belan approached the Teacher and nodded curtly, a gesture the Teacher returned. Sel’den knew they did not dare exchange the traditional Vulcan salute in the open landing zone, in full view of the technicians who were already tending to the ship.

Looking at the larger group for a moment, Belan simply said, “Welcome,” and turned toward the exit from the large, squared-off landing pit. Without another word, at least for the moment, he led the group out of the pit via a set of broad stone stairs, and from there out into the streets.

The city—called Auranthus—was crude and graceless by homeworld standards. A series of gray boxes under a blue-green sky, devoid of the majestic arches and lofty spires that characterized the capitol on Romulus.

But then, that was often the case on the outer worlds, where beauty was sacrificed for the sake of practicality. Even the imported red-orange maqrana trees that lined each byway seemed strangely listless, as if uninspired by their surroundings.

Before long, they came to the city’s manufacturing district, and a small factory building. Sel’den recognized the squat, square structure from the communications he had had with Belan.

After all, this was Belan’s plant, where a portion of this world’s building materials were made. It also represented the official reason for their trip to Constanthus, their ship having been loaded with minerals and other raw materials that Belan required.

They entered the building through the front door and walked through a small anteroom. A moment later, they found themselves at the entrance to a large, open space that was filled with, Sel’den estimated, approximately forty Romulans. Obviously a storage area, Sel’den saw that it had been cleared for use as a meeting place.

The faces of the Constantharines were unfamiliar to Sel’den. Nonetheless, they were Romulans and fellow believers in the great unificationist movement. As far as he was concerned, that made them his brothers.

As one, every Romulan in the echoing chamber lifted his or her hand in the Vulcan greeting. The Teacher returned the gesture and said, “Live long and prosper, followers of Surak.”

“Peace and long life to you,” Belan responded. “We are in a safe place and may speak freely here.”

The Teacher nodded, clearly taking the statement for truth. Sel’den was not quite so confident.

He scanned the room. It had no windows and only two entrances—the one they had used and one opposite it on the other side of the room.

Gesturing, he assigned two of his fellow students to watch the entrance now directly behind them. Then he took another student with him as he made his way across the room to the other entrance.

Meanwhile, the Teacher was approaching a makeshift podium to address the Romulans before him. As interested as he was in what the Vulcan might say, Sel’den focused his attention on the door. Only when he was satisfied that it was secure did he turn around, watching as the Teacher spoke to the assembled group.

“Followers of Surak,” the Vulcan began. He displayed precise control and betrayed no emotion.

As he had done many times before, Sel’den resolved to master the techniques of the Teacher. One day, he vowed silently, he would know such wisdom, such control. He would attain the enlightenment and dignity of the Vulcan way.

“You honor me with your presence,” the Teacher continued, scanning the assemblage. “You show great courage in attempting to bridge the gap between two peoples, who are one in blood. In the weeks and months to come, I shall endeavor to share with you what I have learned about the teachings of Surak and the principles of logic.”

As Sel’den heard the crowd become completely silent, he remembered the first time he had heard the Vulcan speak. And he felt himself once again moved by his teacher’s words.

“We know,” the Vulcan said, “that above all else, Surak was a Teacher. However, though he labored for much of his life to share his wisdom with others, he also remained a student. In fact, Surak once said the best pupil is the one who takes the most care in his teacher’s education.

“This reminds us that since the ancient times, when we were one people, the relationship between student and teacher has been a sacred one. The basis of this relationship is the dialogue that brings both student and teacher closer to enlightenment.”

The Vulcan paused for a moment, to give the assembled Romulans time to consider the weight of his words. But the moment was interrupted by the entrance of a Romulan at the far door.

Sel’den recognized him as Ganos—one of Belan’s people, whom he had seen more than once in the course of their communications. Agitated, Ganos made no effort to control his emotions as he approached Belan.

“Someone here is using a transmitter,” the Romulan reported.

To his credit, Belan retained his control as he faced the assembled Romulans. “We have been betrayed,” he said simply.

No was all Sel’den could think. Then the first Romulan soldiers—disruptors in hand—pushed their way into the room through the door where Ganos had just entered.

For a brief moment the students posted at the door struggled with the incoming soldiers—but the struggle was short and deadly. It ended with Sel’den’s comrades falling in agony to the crackling blue beams of the soldiers’ disruptors.

Without hesitation, Sel’den produced his own concealed hand weapon and made his way across the room, motioning the student next to him to follow. Weaving through the confused crowd, his disruptor pressed against his thigh, Sel’den could only think: The Teacher must be saved, his mission must continue.

If Sel’den could hold off the soldiers, perhaps the Teacher could escape through the back entrance. He spared a moment to dispatch his comrade in the Vulcan’s direction.

Then he continued toward the door, though he could see more soldiers pouring into the room every second. No matter, Sel’den thought. He would do what had to be done to save the Teacher. He started to lift his hand weapon.

“Sel’den—no!” The Teacher’s voice rang out over the soldiers’ commands and the murmurs of confusion.

No other instructions were required. Biting his lip, the student had no choice but to comply.

He dropped his weapon before anyone could see that he had it, and turned to look at his mentor. Beyond the Vulcan, other soldiers were now entering from the back door—the door Sel’den had been guarding.

Watching the chaos that reigned as the soldiers pushed and shoved their way though the assembled Romulans, he knew there would be no escape for the Teacher. Even if Sel’den managed to kill every soldier guarding one of the entrances, the others would overwhelm him and take his master.

The youth’s body and spirit cried out for action. It took every ounce of control he had learned to keep from throwing himself at the soldiers.

At least a fight would give him an honorable death, which was more than he deserved now that he had failed his teacher so completely. And yet, obeying his mentor’s order, he stood his ground.

Sel’den watched the soldiers subdue the few that struggled against them with short, deadly blasts from their pistols. Students fell, writhing in the hideous grasp of the roiling blue disruptor energies. The smell of their burning flesh made Sel’den retch.

Finally, however, a kind of order was established. A stillness settled on the crowd. A despair.

A few moments earlier, Sel’den had seen hope in the faces of the Constantharine unificationists. After all, they were greeting a great Teacher who would take them down Surak’s path. But now those same faces were full of horror and disappointment.

Even those who had come from Romulus looked I shocked. Sel’den felt shame for them.

Looking to the Teacher, he tried to draw strength from the Vulcan’s apparent calm. He tried to emulate the precise and passionless thoughts that were the source of the Teacher’s strength and dignity.

As if aware of Sel’den’s scrutiny, the Vulcan turned to him. His gaze was steady and serene, acknowledging his student’s struggle.

In the Vulcan’s eyes, Sel’den saw no disappointment, judgment, or reproach. Only acceptance of what was— and what would be.

Meanwhile, the soldiers were securing each door exactly as Sel’den himself would have done, to make sure no one escaped. The ranking officer, a chief of security, surveyed the room with a practiced eye.

But there was more to his actions than mere efficiency, Sel’den thought. The officer was sizing up the unificationists. But for what purpose?

Suddenly, he knew. The realization struck him like a physical blow. It took every ounce of his discipline to retain his control—to keep the pounding of his heart from overpowering him—and to determine a logical course of action.

Even as the plan was forming in his mind, he was on the move, taking slow, careful steps toward the Teacher’s makeshift podium. There was enough shuffling among the assembled Romulans that his intent was not immediately detectable to the soldiers.

But that wouldn’t last long. Just a few steps later, Sel’den was by his teacher’s side.

The Vulcan gave him a quizzical look, but Sel’den could not spare any response. The security chief and two soldiers had just reached the podium as well.

Unfortunately, the Teacher’s position as speaker marked him as one in charge of the unificationists. That made him the target of a common ploy among Romulan soldiers.

To firmly establish their control over a group of prisoners—at least until a trial could take place—it was customary to identify a leader and deal with him or her ruthlessly.

Sel’den could not accept this. As long as his mentor lived, the movement had life as well. It was logical, then, to preserve the Teacher’s life at all costs.

Stepping forward, he intercepted the security chief and spoke in a level, even confident tone. “I lead these people,” he said. “By what right are you here? By whose authority?”

The pose did not trouble Sel’den. In this case, the mistruth clearly served a greater good.

Sel’den couldn’t see his teacher’s face, but he could imagine his expression. Right about now, the Vulcan was coming to understand what danger he was in and what Sel’den was attempting to do about it.

At first, the Teacher would no doubt be disappointed in him. On the face of it, at least, Sel’den’s act was an emotional one—an act of overweaning courage.

But this time, Sel’den knew that his logic was flawless. Surely the Vulcan would see that in time.

“You are their leader?” the officer replied. He turned to one of his men.

The Teacher reached out, protesting. “No, you do not—”

But it was too late.

Sel’den allowed himself a small regret: that he would not live to argue the necessity of his actions with his master. Then he heard the crack of the security chief’s voice and saw a soldier drawing his disruptor.

Giving a final mental thanks to Spock, who had honored him with his teaching, Sel’den winced at the bright flash before him.

And felt the agonizing grasp of the disruptor’s rampant energies.

And carried his gratitude to the grave.
