Entre 1934 y 1936 vivió en la isla de Sark con un grupo de artistas y, de vuelta en Londres, enseñó dibujo y pintura e ilustró obras de Coleridge, Stevenson, Carroll y otros. En 1946 publicó Titus Groan, luego Gormenghast (1950) seguido de Titus Solo (1959), una trilogía gótica que pronto se convirtió en una obra de culto.
